Imperialism can be defined as taking over and making the people follow your rule and laws. Famous countries that used imperialism are Russia, The Ottoman Empire, and Japan. The weird thing about these countries is that they are all involved with war and want to have the top rule, but then all fail. The Ottoman Empire fell during WWI, Russia, or the Soviet Union, fell in 1991 during the Cold War, and Imperial Japan fell after losing WWII. Coincidentally, two of those three imperial countries fell to the United States. Imperial countries normally have a strong military and strong governments, but when they lose a war they collapse and eventually fall, making way for new better forms of government.

Imperialism and nationalism, strong desire for your country, are different because when another country takes over yours, you will use your nationalism to help fight the country taking over yours. Nationalist hate imperialist because nationalist love their countries and imperialist want to take over the nationalist's country.

There are two different froms of imperial rule. Protectorate, which is when local rulers were left in place but were expected to follow the advice of European advisors on issues such as trade or missionary activity. Sphere of Influence is an area in which an outside power claimed exclusive investment or trading privileges.

Africa has had probelms with imperialism during the 1800s. Almost every part of Africa was taken over by another European country. France, Britain, and Germany occupied most of the countries. The Europeans had to fight the local tribes in order to take control of the countries and taking out a lot of the tribes. Not all the countries fought but in Algeria, East and West Africa fought back, putting up a good fight, but eventually losing. They also took the Africans as slaves for a while before outlawing slavery and slave trades. While in Africa, the Europeans were able to explore the continent, finding a lot of information and geography about it. Also, the Europeans had better advantages in technology and war stragedy compared to other countries, therefore giving them the advantage over the countries they took over.

The lasting effects of imperialism are poorer countries from the government not caring and just wanting to rule. Famine and debt occur for the same reason. If you were asked to give one word on the effects of imperialism, you could say government.
